Coming from a long line of welders, auto body repairmen, and blacksmiths, it seemed that metalworking was in my blood. I first discovered metalsmithing while attending Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Amid my Graphic Design and typography courses, one art class undoubtedly captured my interest above the rest: Introductions to Jewelry and Metalsmithing.
Learning how to fabricate, set stones, and finish metal to create jewelry was more fulfilling to me than arranging type on a computer screen. Changing my major, I explored the world of metalwork by taking courses in casting, fabrication, forging and raising. From that moment on, I swapped the computer mouse for an acetylene torch and began a career in jewelry making.
